In 2023, Joey Andrews made the jump from karting to cars, joining Hicks Motorsports to drive a Spec Miata in the NASA Teen Mazda Challenge. He finished P3 in both the overall championship and Teen Mazda Challenge subcategory respectively. In addition, he was the highest-finishing rookie.

Joey’s move to cars follows what many fellow racers and coaches called “Joey’s breakout year.” Finishing 3rd in Tri-C Karters in his rookie year racing in the LO206 Senior class, in addition to many other achievements, made 2022 a very memorable year.

​

Joey is 19 years old and has lived in Los Angeles for his entire life. His motorsports journey started at 11 when he started watching Top Gear and wanted to be the next Stig. He then came up with the nickname “The Stiglette.”

In 2018, Joey won a trip to the US Grand Prix which sparked his racing bug, and in 2019 he started racing karts on an outdoor circuit for the first time. 

​

In 2020 Joey continued to improve earning his first 2 podiums. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Joey spent his time sim racing trying to improve in every way possible. Off the track, Joey was invited to host the Porsche Club of America’s Virtual California Festival Speed featuring guests such as Patrick Long.

In 2021, Joey finished P4 in the CalSpeed Karting Sprint Series SE Championship and P10 in his first ever endurance race, the Machismo 12 Hour. Away from the track Joey interned at WRTeknica and Late Night Playset, spending every weekend networking in the automotive and motorsport world.

Joey started 2022 by winning the A-Main in the first round of the CalSpeed Karting Sprint Series. Joey finished 3rd in Tri-C Karters in the LO206 Senior class. He also competed in his first national karting race, The 4 Cycle Super Showdown. He ended the year by again competing in the Machismo 12 Hour and doing his very first test in a Spec Miata.

2023 was Joey’s first year racing in Spec Miata. Joey finished P3 in his first race and continued to improve every weekend. He finished the season’s final round on the podium in both races with a pair of second-place finishes. All of the hard work paid off with Joey finishing P3 in both the overall championship and Teen Mazda Challenge subcategory. 

 

Joey will continue racing in the NASA SoCal Spec Miata Teen Mazda Challenge in 2024 with the goal of going to the Mazda MX-5 Cup Shootout at the end of the year. Joey will also be dipping his toes into as many cars as possible next year with plans on competing in endurance races.
